STRATEGY is a concept of cause and effect to produce Victory
over a Thinking Enemy over time.

VICTORY is getting what you are willing to accept
at a price you are willilng to pay.

Whether for a nation, an organization, a movement or a person, when strategy fails the result is always catastrophic.  This is because strategy deals with the most fundamental elements of any human  equation – cause and effect, time and resources, victory and defeat.  A solid long term strategy may survive short term tactical blunders. But even the most brilliant of short term tactics and operations cannot compensate for a weak long term strategy.

This is because strategy – especially national strategy in time of war – is pursued not in splendid isolation, but against a living, breathing thinking enemy who is trying to foil your strategy and make his own succeed, even as you are trying to defeat him.

Strategy is not just about crafting a plan.  It is about struggling with an opposing mind, even as the context, resources, and objectives constantly change. Victory is never just “achieved”; it is ripped from the grip of a thinking enemy.  A successful strategist must never forget that fact

Because life and death – victory and defeat – hang in the balance
